Long Description:
The road crossing the bridge is the busy A428 which goes to
Northampton. There was a bridge here from as early as 1136 with
parts of the present bridge still being original, making it one of
the oldest in Bedfordshire. Turvey bridge was widened in 1935 and
crosses three branches of the river Great Ouse in these parts. The
bridge overlooks Turvey Mill which is now home to flats and The
Three Fishes public house which was recently renovated and rescued
from financial ruin. On the island stand two statues bought by
Charles Longuet Higgins in 1844; they are constantly awash with
water as the river floods and recedes, wild and then tranquil
again. There are some beautiful countryside and riverside walks
with loads of wildlife and a weir higher upstream.
