If you follow the path around Roque de Garcia you can't miss Roque Chinchado. The solitary rock
pillar - 27m high - will be on your left. It's also called "God's Finger".
This area of Las Cañadas is probably among the most photographed stones
in the world, and if the sun really is playing with the roques, you know why -
the many colours in the stone are fascinating. And Teide is in the back.
Rocque de Garcia layed once very deep, but was exposed when the area of
Caldera de Las Cañadas was formed. From then onwards, they have been constantly worn away by erosion. The elements have sculpted irregular shapes due to the facts that they are made up of different
materials. The base of Roque Cinchado is disingrated more quickly than the upper part and will eventually collapse under its own
weight.
The astonishing shape of Roque Chinchado and the silhouette of Teide, the highest point in Spain,
have earned them the honour of appearing on 1,000 pesetas bank notes.
