"The weekly auction at the Gentner Commission Market, in business here since 1939, draws more than a thousand people every Wednesday to buy and sell. Visitors can bid on all manner of collectibles and knickknacks, furniture and tools, pets and livestock. Locally grown fruits and vegetables and some fine pies and preserves can also be had.

But the main attraction is all the junk — there is no other way to put it.

Nothing in the upstate region is quite like this bazaar, staged on a hill overlooking Main Street in this village of about 4,200 people 30 miles south of Buffalo.

“It’s sort of like a throwback to another time, a living history,” said E. S. Wochensky, a Springville filmmaker whose 2004 look at the market, “Shoot the Moon,” has earned awards at several festivals.

“You go to a big-box store and buy the same item you can buy two counties or two states over,” he said. “At Gentner’s, you find things that don’t exist anywhere else. It’s a pure market, and you don’t find that very often anymore.” "
