The Staple Bend Tunnel , located about 4 miles east of Johnstown, Pennsylvania , was constructed between 1831 and 1834 for the Allegheny Portage Railroad It was the first railroad tunnel in the united states.
It is on the national register of historic places. (visit link) and is a part of the national park system. (visit link)

The Tunnel is at the end of a 2 1/2 mile long cinder paved trail. there are informational signs at the parking area, along the way, and at the tunnel.
