In 1907 a suspension footbridge was erected at the south end of town, at the end of Romney Road. It originally provided access for workers living on the west bank of the river to reach the shoe factory on the east bank. By the 1990s the growth of Kendal, especially to the south-east, meant another river crossing for vehicles was needed. This would enable cars to cross the river without having to go all around the town centre.
It was decided to build a road bridge where the footbridge stood. Many people liked the old suspension bridge, however, and a campaign to save it arose. Instead of scrapping it, it was decided to move it to the north end of town where it would provide useful access to Mintsfeet Industrial Estate and the schools on the east side of the river.
The simple idea of picking it up and moving it didn't quite work out and much material needed replacing. However, some parts of the original structure are incorporated into the new bridge, which still looks like the previous Romney Footbridge. Today, as well as being used by pedestrians, it forms part of a cycle route and it is quite busy.
A pleasant walk can be had by heading north from the town centre, on the west bank of the river. From Stramongate go past the back of the County Council offices and the Magistrates Court, along to the bridge. Easiest parking is on Mintsfeet Industrial Estate (turn left after the Suzuki garage), which is off the A6 on the east side.
