The Beach
The multi-activity beach offering more than the usual swimming and sunbathing. Horseriding, rollerblading, windsurfing, kite surfing, walking and, nearby, golfing, are among other popular pursuits.
Velvet Strand North Beach in Portmarnock is one of the designated beaches under the Quality of Bathing Waters Regulations, 1992. Regular monitoring is carried out on the beach during the summer months as required by the Regulations.
Sand Dunes
The contours of Portmarnock strand change constantly during the year as sand is moved to and fro by storms and wind. Extra beach has been created at the southern end of the beach. A feature over the last few years has been the deterioration of the sand dunes behind the strand.
Golf Course
Surounding the beach there and two golf course's one of which is famous for its world class course which formally opened on December 26 1894. the other course, opened in the 1990s and was designed by German golfer Bernhard Langer. That golf course and hotel are built around the former home of the Jameson distilling family famous for the "Irish Whiskey" brand.
