There are a lot of Rama's in Thai history. And they all have statues somewhere in Bangkok. They all tend to rule for long periods of time and are very keen on keeping their country free from the hold of any other land. In fact, the name Thailand means free land (at least that's what a tour guide in Bangkok told me and I'm sure he wouldn't lie). The current king has ruled for 60 years. Yes, he's been around for a while. He just turned 80 in December. He is much loved by his people and an insult to him could land you in a lot of hot water. But like the other kings before him, he is a man of the people who is loved and respected. Currently the whole nation is in mourning for the king's sister who died the first week of January. There are a lot of special rules during this time so when I went to take pictures of Rama III's statue I wasn't sure how close to get. I did zoom in as much as I could. You will notice that streamers and flowers have been placed at his feet and there was even incense burning in a pot before him today. So, these are as close a shot as I'm likely to get without perhaps offending someone. Hope you get a chance to come by and see the statue and nearby wat for yourself.
