The town of Allensworth was established in 1908 by Colonel Allen Allensworth. It was not only founded, but it was also financed and governed entirely by African Americans. The California State Parks purchased land within the historical townsite of Allensworth in 1974, at which time it became Allensworth State Historic Park. Several early 20th century buildings have been reconstructed, including the Colonel's house, a two room schoolhouse, the Baptist church and library.
