The dam impounds waters from Scotts Run to form Hopewell Lake in French Creek State Park. The lake is used for fishing, canoeing, kayaking and non-motorized water sports. This dam has two spillways, a scenic, rocky one at a lower elevation and a larger cement one at a higher elevation if lake levels get too high.
