From Missouri - A Guide to the "Show Me" State - St. Louis
section:
The SOLDIERS MEMORIAL BUILDING, Thirteenth to Fourteenth, Chestnut to
Pine Sts., a $1,000,000, 2-story structure of Bedford stone and granite in
modern classic design, fills the central block of Memorial Plaza. Opened
in 1938, it consists of a loggia and two museum structures, surrounded by a
portico with squared columns. In the center of the loggia, beneath a
mosaic ceiling is a cenotaph of blue-black Belgian marble, bearing the names of
1,249 St. Louisans who died in the World War. The museum rooms, finished
in Ste. Genevieve marbles, contained a collection of war relics and trophies.
The second floor consists of assembly rooms for service organizations. The
Soldiers Memorial Building continues to be used for memorial ceremonies in St.
Louis. The museum's has an interesting collection of artifacts. Not
mentioned in the Guide description are the four Bedford stone sculptures by
Walker Hancock. They represent virtues in a soldier's life-courage and vision
stand at the south stairs and loyalty and sacrifice stand at the north stairs.
