The Chalmette Ferry crosses the Mississippi River between Chalmette and lower Algiers, Louisiana. Usually two ferry boats operate from this site, both carrying vehicles and pedestrians. The photographs were taken from the Algiers ferry landing; boarding the ferry from this point will cost $1 for vehicles; pedestrians cross for free.

The Chalmette Ferry is operated by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development - Crescent City Connection Division. It operates daily from 6:00 AM to 8:45 PM.

Immediately adjacent to the Chalmette Ferry landing (on the Chalmette side) is the Exxon Mobile Chalmette Refinery.
Body of water served: Mississippi River

Places served:
This ferry primarily serves commuters between Chalmette (and points east) and communities on the west bank of the Mississippi River. The trip across the river is short but relaxing and a great way to get up close and personal with the Mississippi River! On the Chalmette side, the ferry connects with Paris Rd, aka La. 47. La. 47 crosses Bayou Bienvenue, then becomes I-510, which crosses over the Intracoastal Waterway-Mississippi River Gulf Outlet (MRGO) near the NASA Michoud facility. After crossing US Hwy. 90 (Chef Menteur Hwy.), I-510 joins I-10. On the Algiers side, the ferry connects with Patterson Rd., a local street that runs parallel to the river. Just downriver from the Algiers ferry landing is an entrance to the Intracoastal Waterway/Algiers Lock, a waterway provides a "shortcut" past some of the tortuous river curves around the city of New Orleans. Algiers was one of the first settlements outside of New Orleans. It was founded in 1719 and lies directly across the Mississippi River from the French Quarter. Ferry service is also available from the foot of Canal St. to Algiers.
