Background: Red Jacket was a great Native American Chief of the Seneca Nation during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Originally called Otetiani, Red Jacket was given his English name because of the red coat that he was famous for wearing while he fought for the English during the American Revolution. As a proud, intelligent, and passionate leader, and a captivating oratory, Red Jacket became one of the most respected Native Americans in Western New York. He dedicated his life to making peace with the European settlers while still fighting to preserve the values and customs of his native people. After his death, the body of Red Jacket was placed in Forest Lawn cemetery under a great statue of himself that still stands today. Along with this carving of Red Jacket, there are streets, awards, local contests, and memorials named for him, serving as daily reminders of the strong and fearless leader that he once was.
