The lighthouse at Fort Niagara is actually the third light in this area. The original light was the first on the Great Lakes and was located on top of the French castle inside Fort Niagara.
This particular lighthouse went into service in 1872. It is 61' tall and, when it was functioning, could be seen 25 miles out into Lake Ontario. The lens is fourth order fresnel installed in 1859. It was taken out of service in 1996 and was replaced by light beacon at the Coast Guard Station.
