Description:
Keith Whitley was born July 1, 1954 in Sandy Hook, Kentucky. He was a friend with another soon to be country music star Rick Skaggs, and both Keith and Ricky were discovered by bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley. Soon after the two sang Stanley Brother Songs as the opening act for Ralph and his Clinch Mountain Boy, Ralph asked them both to join his band. The rest is as they say is history as both Keith and Ricky went on to become two of the most popular singer in the Country Music Industry. In 1986, Keith Whitley released the album “L. A. to Miami, which gave him his first hit single, “Miami My Amy.” Over the next couple of years Keith would have three more hits with “Ten Feet Away,” “Homecoming 63,” and “Hard Livin.” It was during his tour to promote the “L. A. to Miami,” album that he would meet what he would call the love of his life, fellow country music star Lorrie Morgan. Morgan’s roots in country music run deep, as she is the daughter of Country Music and Grand Ole Opry Star George Morgan. Keith and Lorrie were married in 1987. In 1988 Keith released perhaps his most successful albums, “Don’t Close Your Eyes.” The album featured the Lefty Frizzell classic, “I Never Go Around Mirrors,” which was one of his most popular concert songs. The first three singles off of this album, “When You Say Nothing At All,” “I’m No Stranger To The Rain,” and “Don’t Close Your Eyes,” all reached Number 1 on the Billboard Country Music Chart. Keith’s final recording, “I Wonder Do You Think Of Me,” was scheduled for release in May 1989. However, prior to its release, Keith Whitley died suddenly at his home on May 9, 1989. He is buried just a few yards from his father-in-law, George Morgan, in Nashville’s Spring Hill Cemetery.
