The excellent quality of the sky for astronomy in the Canaries is the reason that the observatories of the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) are an "astronomy reserve" which has been available to the international community since 1979.

Astrophysics studies in the Canaries began in 1960 in the Teide Observatory. Only the skies above Hawaii and Southern Chile are similar to those found here, with no pullution and very little light. In 1988 the observatories at Izaña and in the Caldera de Taburiente on the island of La Palma were designated a World Reserve for
Astronomy.
The Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias organises visits to the Observatory for colleges and groups as part of a public education campaign designed to make knowledge about astronomy accessible to everyone. The Observatorio del Teide has a Visitor Centre housed in an empty dome, which has been equipped to teach visitors about science. The centre has a capacity of around forty people and is used to explain what an observatory is, how telescopes work and the importance of Astronomy for the human race.
