NAS Cecil Field was operational from 1941 until 1999, when it was decommissioned by the Navy. The land was turned over to the city of Jacksonville, and the Jacksonville Aviation Authority made the airfield and associated buildings a public airport.
The facility is now used for general aviation, corporate aircraft, and air cargo. The military still has a presence here, with units from the Army National Guard and Coast Guard Reserve based at the field, along with the Civil Air Patrol. Aerospace companies Boeing and Northrop Grumman have offices, and Florida Community College at Jacksonville's Aviation Program has a hangar for their planes and equipment.
One interesting note, the preliminary work for using Cecil Field as a spaceport was recently begun. Studies are being done to determine the feasibility of using Cecil for launching and landing space-bound vehicles.
