Long Description:There are negotiations in place at present to decide the future of
Bromham Bridge as it needs to be protected from damage. One of
these options is to close the bridge to traffic but there are many
other bridges in the county which cope with traffic on a contraflow
system and effectively preserve the unique structures of these
ancient crossings without cutting off a direct route to town and
the hospital.
The bridge itself spans the river and surrounding flood meadows
with 26 magnificent arches. There are many walks through the
village of Bromham and alongside the river. Many pathways are level
and well surfaced with beautiful views of the country and
wildlife.
To walk across the bridge make use of the regular bays where you
can step off the road to allow passing traffic to drive by safely.
The bridge is first mentioned in records as early as 1224 in Pipe
Rolls (the account records of the Exchequer of England) whereas the
Mill right next to the bridge is hinted at from 1086 in the
Domesday survey being one of two Mills in the vilage at the time.
In 1813-14 Bromham Bridge was rebuilt. The 6 foot wide causeway was
replaced by 20 new arches 17 feet wide. 1902-03 sees Bromham Bridge
widened. Today we see the full structure as it spans the river once
full of eels below.
