Michelangelo completed the famous statue of David in 1504, taking over the work that was begun by Donatello around 1464, but halted by Donatello's death. The enormous figure was placed in front of the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, Italy, but centuries of exposure to the elements prompted its move indoors. In 1873, the statue was moved to the Accademia Gallery, where it now stands, drawing thousands of visitors annually.

This particular replica is one of only two in the world that are carved to the exact specifications of Michelangelo's masterpiece. It was carved in the early 1960's by Sollazini & Sons of Carrara marble excavated from the Fantiscritti Quarry in Miseglia, Tuscany, the exact quarry where the original's marble was excavated. This replica is the same height (17 feet) and weight (10 tons) as the original. Work was originally begun for the 1963 World's Fair in New York City; it then was housed at the Movieland Wax Museum in Buena Park, California, for 42 years. It was purchased by Ripley Entertainment in September, 2007, and now stands near the entrance of the grounds of the Ripley's Believe It! or Not museum in St. Augustine, Florida.
