The locks on the Moscow Canal, which connects the city of Moscow with the Volga river, have large towers housing the machinery. These are uniquely decorated. Lock #3, about 38 miles downstream from the city has two huge copper sculptures of sailing ships on the downstream towers.
We were told these are the Santa Maria, the ship in which Columbus reached North America. The connection to a Russian canal is tenuous but perhaps it's meant to contrast earlier transportation with modern technology.
