The eternal flame at this World War II memorial issues from a five pointed Russian star in front of a tomb containing the remains of an unknown soldier killed in the battle of Moscow in 1941.
The tomb is located in the Alexander Gardens just outside the Kremlin walls, close to the Corner Arsenal Tower. Two guards stand at attention on each side of the tomb and every hour on the hour there's a changing of the guard ceremony.
The tomb was dedicated in 1967 and the flame was lit with a torch brought from an eternal flame in St Petersburg.
