Cape Charles AFS and air field was operational from 1949 to 1981 as an Airforce Station. This was a BUIC site also.
Cape Charles AFS is located on the tip of the Delmarva Peninsula, and started out in 1941 as Fort Winslow. A coastal artillery station. The name was changed again to Fort John Custis in 1942 an closed in 1948.
In 1949 the Air Force took over the base for air defense radar.
The site is now the Eastern Shore Wildlife refuge.
