The black residents of the community of Salem were buried in the "Old Black Cemetery". This cemetery was long unmarked with either a gravestone or a sign, and is located in the newly-opened Kingsville Memorial Gardens along Division Road, between Road 3 and Road 4.
Except for members of the Rhyers (Ryers) family, it is uncertain who else is buried in the cemetery, or how many gravesites there are. However, the bolded names on the stone indicate the best guess of the township as to the families buried here. If correct, there must be at least 19 graves here, for the 19 names bolded. The cemetery came under the ownership of the township of Gosfield South, and is now under the care of the town of Kingsville.
This cemetery is now designated by a single monument in a ring of stones. The monument is carved on one side with the names of all the black settlers in the area, and the other carries the history of the stone and cemetery.
Much of the information was found in Kingsville, 1790 - 2000, A Stroll Through Time, vol. 2, written and published by the Kingsville/Gosfield Heritage Society, copyright 2003.
