The Murray Hill area of Jacksonville grew rapidly after World War II, with small homes being built for new families of returning sailors and soldiers. A shopping and entertainment district sprung up in the middle of it, along Edgewood Avenue. The Murray Hill Theatre was part of this district, opening its doors in 1949 for patrons to enjoy movies on its screen.
The Theatre enjoyed a long run showing movies, but over the years the neighborhood became run down, and the Theatre closed its doors in 1994. It was briefly used as a nightclub, but is now used as a Christian rock concert venue, under the same name. It features live music, a cafe, recording studios, and a small music store. The original marquee is still in place, and now features names of headlining bands rather than movies. It has become quite successful, and enjoys a strong local following.
