In 1926, Bert Donaldson was in the process of investigating a local organized crime unit. According to an article on corporatemeetings.com, he was gunned down by four unknown gunmen while he was eating breakfast at the Georgian Terrace hotel. The murder led to a nationwide manhunt for the killers, who were never found.
