Long Description:
Three gold dredges worked the Sumpter Valley from 1913 to 1954.
This dredge (Sumpter #3) was launched in 1935 and was built
substantially from parts from the first dredge (Sumpter #1), which
had been idle for 10 years. Between them, the dredges worked more
than 8 miles of the valley floor, extracting $10 to $12 million
worth of gold.
The Sumpter #3 Dredge had a 125 foot hull length and was 52 feet
wide. The digging ladder consists of 72 buckets, each weighing 1
ton and holding 9 cubic feet of gravel. The rear stacker is 96 feet
long with a 35-inch discharge belt.
