Marker Name: Traces of Mining History
Marker Text: Imagine the noisy clatter of long ago when mining activity was a vital part of the region’s history. Approximately three and a half miles south of this location are the remains of the Cougar-Independence Mill Site. This mill processed ore from nearby mines between the early 1900’s and the 1940’s.
Finding gold nuggets was a miner’s dream! In reality, most of the gold was locked inside rocks and required processing. In it’s day, the Cougar-Independence Mill processed 61,125 tons of ore from the gold, silver and copper mines. The gold that passed through this mill was worth $787,815. Today, that same gold would bring over six and a half million dollars!
