The Middle of the World (Mitad del Mundo) Monument near Quito, Ecuador designates the line of the equator as drawn by early European explorers in 1736. Note the line does not lie exactly on the equator according to our GPS receivers! However, it does get pretty darn close, especially for 1736. This monument is a must-see if you are in or around Quito.

There is a parking fee and entrance fee to enter the monument. There is also a museum inside the monument which requires an additional fee. On the surrounding grounds of the monument is a colonial-style town complete with town square, post office, church, bullring, shops and restaurants.
