This memorial is located in the parking lot of Bass River State Park, off of 762 Stage Road in New Gretna, NJ. This is the first memorial I have seen which has the pictures of fire fighters who died and mentions a single event.

This memorial is located at the welcome center in Bass River State Park. I have been to this park many times for various geocaching endeavors and this was the first time I noticed the memorial. There was a huge fire in this forest back in 1977 and on July 22, four men from the Eagleswood Vol. Fore Co. died while fighting the fire.

The memorial mentions Brush Truck 731 operating out of Station 52. I guess this represents the machinery the four men were using at the time of their demise. The four men were: Eagleswood fire chief Harold "Skip" Cranmer, assistant chief Marcus Cullen, fireman Herbert Blackwell and John "Red" Baker. The inscription at the bottom of the memorial reads: "They gave their lives protecting the lives and property of others".

The folks working in the welcome center told me some information about the fire but no details in particular. They did tell me there is one other memorial for firemen at the firehouse a few streets away. That particular memorial commemorates CCC boys who in the 30's died fighting a fire at Bass River.

I found this on the internet:
"The Bass River Memorial honors wildland firefighters who died on different incidents. It was originally dedicated in 1976 to commemorate the 40th anniversary loss of 5 firefighters (two State Fire Wardens and three Civilian Conservation Corps fire fighters) who were burned over in 1936 while fighting a forest fire near the Town of Warren Grove.
On July 22, 1977, four volunteer firefighters from the Eagleswood Fire Company were killed when their engine was burned over on a fire several miles from this memorial, and in 1982 a plaque was added for them. Another memorial stone was placed in front of the Forest Office.
