Description: Baxter Byerly "Buck" Jordan, was most widely known as a Major League First Baseman. He broke into the Majors at age 20 after playing with local Cotton Mill teams from his hometown area of Coolemee, NC , and the minor leagues. He played with the NY Giants in 1927, 1929. The Washington Senators 1931. The Boston Braves/Bees 1932-1937, The Cincinnati Reds 1937-1938. And the Philadelphia Phillies in 1938. Known as a solid batting average hitter. He had a lifetime batting average of .299 . While not a power hitter, Buck was well known as a very solid defensive player. He rubbed elbows as he said with the top names of baseball from that era. He played with his childhood hero Babe Ruth in Ruth's last year 1935 with the Boston Braves. Fondly told stories of his playing days, and shared photos of himself with Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Dizzy Dean, Carl Hubbell, Walter Johnson just to name a few. After he retired from baseball. Mr. Jordan was a farmer for most of his life. He and his lovely wife Mildred, raised 5 foster children, in the rural outskirts of Salisbury, NC. I had the pleasure of knowing Mr. & Mrs. Jordan, and was lucky enough to visit with them about once a week for several years. Both were two of the very nicest people you could have ever wanted to meet.
