The statue was placed in honor of Quanto and Titan, two K-9 police dogs, both German shepherds, killed in the line of duty in 1999. The plaque on the statue reads: "God made guardian angels in all shapes and sizes, ours just happen to be 'Police Dogs'."
Until Quanto was shot and killed on June 17, 1999, Jacksonville had never lost a police dog in the 14 years they had been used by the department. Then on July 10, 1999, Titan was slain. Additional information about these two wonderful animals is available on the internet

We've listed the date built as 1/1/2000 as an approximate date because we've been unable to determine the actual date; however, a news article dated December 19, 1999, makes references to two German Shepherd statues soon being placed outside the police academy although only one actually got placed
