During the Civil War, Greeneville changed hands several times. Although Tennessee as a whole voted to secede, Greeneville an East Tennessee remained predominately loyal to the Union. This memorial stands in tribute to the soldiers of Greene County who fought with the Union Army during the Civil War.
The inscription on the memorial reads:
"To the memory of the Union Soldiers who enlisted in the Union Army from Greene County. 1861-1865. In the hour of their country's peril, they were loyal and true."
