Named Tecumseh by his father, he was christened William by relatives who raised him after his father's death. He never used William and his friends called him "Cump."
He served under U.S. Grant and eventually led Union troops through the south to the shores of Georgia. Along with another Ohio native son, Gen. Sheridan, he instituted the scorched earth tactics, leaving a trail of devastation in his wake.
