Every year, a beautiful, tall evergreen tree is cut and transported from Nova Scotia to Boston and lit up for the people to enjoy. This tree is a special gift to the city of Boston. The following is why taken from the Wikipedia article on the subject - (visit link)

As of this writing, tomorrow, December 6th, 2007 will be the 90th anniversary of an incredibly trajic event in Halifax. On that day in 1917, at 8:40 am in the morning, the French cargo ship, Mont-Blanc, fully loaded with wartime explosives, collided with the Norwegian ship Imo, unloaded at the time. Mont-Blanc caught fire 10 minutes later, then 25 minutes later, exploded. All buildings within two square km were obliterated and many more heavily damaged from the blast as well as from hot fragments. About 2,000 people were killed and 9,000 injured. See the article for more details.

One of the first U.S. cities to respond was Boston, which had several trains sent with donations within days.

Since 1971, the city of Halifax has sent a Christmas tree, chosen under strict guidelines, to be set up and displayed in Boston. The specs from the Provincial Government web site, is here: (visit link) .

Currently, it stands on Boston Common, though I remember it being at the Prudential Center for many years before the Prudential Mall was rebuilt. Thank you, Halifax, for the many wonderful trees over the years!

NOTE: There are THREE big Christmas trees that now are lit up. This one remains at Boston Common and the lighting ceremony now includes a stage with acts and gets local TV coverage. Another tree is in the Quincy Market area that also has local TV coverage - but it's not the Halifax tree. A third tree is tied to the side of Macy's in Downtown Crossing. This is also not the Halifax tree.
