Long Description:
Being a volunteer for the Manatee County Parks gave me a little
headstart into visiting this preserve which isn't open to the
public yet. It is now open as of 7/19/08 to the public. This canoe
launch allows canoes and kayak to see the preserve from a whole
different perspective. It is man-made and was dug out throughout
the preserve for people to use. It is only 4' deep along most of
the run except where it goes through a small lake. There is a few
small offshoots that can take you out to the bay and river, but
mostly it is a run to go up and back. Now open this is the put in
point for all canoe and kayak from this preserve.
Parking/put-in/launching information: The coordinates are where we launched from, the parking hasn't been established yet. I will post coords when it is. It is open but they parking area is still under construction.
Paddling conditions to be expected: Flatwater with no current since this is a man-made run through the preserve. There is openings out into Tampa Bay and there is a current during high tide coming in.
Difficulty of the trip: A nice and easy trip to and back from launch point. You can go as far as you like and feel comfortable with and then go back again.
Length of trip: 5 miles is what we did roundtrip
Portages: None at the moment, the stream was created and is 4' at almost the whole run.
Permits required: No Fees at the moment
Type of trip: This is a looping trip, you have to go and come back to this put in spot.
Other information: There is a Tower that you can stop and check out the preserve a short distance into the trip. There is a eagles nest a short distance from the tower, please be quiet and try not to make too much noise as the eagles are nesting at this time. There are a few bridges you will be passing under, but they are clearing marked.
