If you were driving down Pacific Highway back in the '40s, one of the places you'd be sure to spot was The Poodle Dog Restaurant in Fife. It's still there, sporting its pink-and-white neon poodle out front. It was a happening place in its day, with both Louis Armstrong and Glen Miller performing in the restaurant’s lounge, “the Pup Room”.
These days the building has been remodeled and the food receives mixed reviews. But it still serves your typical American style food for inexpensive prices and a big dose of old style ambience.
State Route 99 goes by many names as it wanders its way from the city of Fife near Tacoma to Everett: Pacific Highway, International Boulevard, Marginal Way, Alaska Way Viaduct, Aurora Avenue and probably a few that I’ve missed. It was the main Federal highway (US99) linking Seattle and Tacoma until I-5 replaced it in the 1960’s.
All along the route you can see the neon remnants of the highway’s golden years. Signs for motels, diners, bowling alley’s and until 2005 a drive-in movie theater.
State: Washington
 Nearest City: Fife
Type: Americana - Motel, diner, roadside attraction, etc.
