The purpose of the Franklin Mine No. 2 Shaft, sunk before 1910, was to mine coal down to 500 feet below sea level. The elevation of the mine opening is approx 800 feet. The mine shaft is a rectangular hole 19'6" x 18'8" and is over 1300 feet deep. Try dropping a rock through the rebar and listen for how long it takes to hit the bottom. Other visitors have tried lowering flashlights and light sticks down into the shaft to see deeper inside - a cool idea.
The concrete seal and grate was placed over the shaft for public safety in 1984 by the Washington State Parks & Recreation Commission with funds provided by the US Dept of the Interior Office of Surface Mining, under P.L. 95-87
