This waymark was exceptionally allowed by the group managers. This replica is in front of the Tourist Information Centre in the centre of Carlisle. It is a copy of a hexagonal pillar box originally designed by an architect from Haselmere, John Penfold. This design is nicknamed 'Penfold'.
Plaque on replica reads
"This replica Victorian pillar box was installed on 15 December 1989 to commemorate the fact that in 1853 Carlisle was the first place in mainland Britain to have a roadside pillar box."
Channel Islands had the first post boxes in 1852, mainland UK followed in 1853. (
