Chief Logan was born of French and Cayuga parents. He lived in Pennsylvania at least a portion of his life and actively promoted peace between settlers and Native American Indian tribes. Chief Logan's peace efforts came to an end when members of his family were killed in the Yellow Creek Massacre. From that point forward he spent the remainder of his days trying to prevent the westward migration of settlers into Ohio.
This carving was made from a 7 ton red oak log. It was dedicated on August 4, 2006 in a Smudging Ceremony attended by representatives from many tribes including the Cayuga, Choctaw, Cherokee, Comanche, Chickasaw, Iroquois, and Shawnee. Smudging is a Native American ritual completed to cleanse or purify a space.
