Former 1830s canal route converted to rails before the Civil War. Really nice old canal era town nearby.

Trail follows the old canal bed, past a number of old locks. Be sure to check out the aqueduct nearby the trail head. Metamora is way cool, too. I noticed a sign for a future mountain bike trail running off the main trail. I rode the trail and it is not bad. I prefer a paved surface, but this was okay. Nice to see the old locks along the way.
