Fort Hays was the fort where John Dunbar received orders to head to the deserted Fort Sedgewick on the frontier. This scene was shot in the crazy commanding officer's quarters - the officer who thought he was king and shot himself after giving Dunbar orders.
Although some of the props are different, the room still has the feel that it did in the movie.
Dances with Wolves was shot in various areas of South Dakota. When the movie was finished the set was purchased and turned into a roadside attraction. You can now tour the buildings that were "Fort Hays", an actual fort located in Kansas. There are also a variety of areas set up like a blacksmith shop, a rope making area, and a brick making area, where people can view how things were made during the time the movie was set in. All this can be toured for free, however the Cowboy dinner/variety show has a charge.
