HARDEE'S ATTACK
July 20, 1864. At 3:30 P.M., 3 divisions of Hardee’s A.C., [CSA] Bate’s, Walker’s, & Maney’s, moved to the attack of newton’s 4th A.C. division [US] posted on the ridge 200 yards north of Collier Road.
Bate, on the right of the corp, was just west of Clear Creek; Walker at the center, astride Peachtree Road, & Maney (formerly Cheatham) on Walker’s left. Peachtree was a winding country road bordered by heavily wooded tracks largely of Collier ownership in the battlefield area. The house of Andres J. Collier (of Collier Mill) stood at S. W. Corner Peachtree & Collier roads. While leading his brigade, Gen. C. H. Stevens, of Walker’s division was killed near the Collier House.
