Although sometimes called a department store, GUM(pronounced "goom") has always been a collection of individual shops under one roof. The ornate three story facade occupies most of the east side of Red Square. Replacing an earlier market, The Upper Trading Row, and initially known by that name, it was built between 1890 and 1893 by architect Alexander Pomerantsev and engineer Vladimir Shukhov . The building features elements of Russian medieval architecture combined with a steel framework and glass roof.
By the time of the revolution in 1917 the building contained about 1200 seperate stalls and stores. Under the Soviets it was nationalized and renamed Gosudarstvennyj Universalny Magazin (State Universal Store). Stalin converted it to office space in 1928 and it did not reopen as a collection of stores until 1953. During the lean consumer goods years of the 1950s and 1960s GUM was often the only place to have things and long queues to purchase something would form across Red Square.
After the demise of communism GUM was privatized and underwent a remarkable transformation. It is now owned by the supermarket chain Perekryostok and Bosco di Ciliegi, a Russian luxury-goods distributor and boutique operator. As a private shopping mall, it was renamed with Gosudarstvennyj replaced by Glavnyj. The new name, which retains the well known GUM abbreviation, translates as Main Universal Store.
There are now about 200 stores, most of them upscale and familiar brand names: Loius Vuitto, Benetton, Levis, Nike, Estee Lauder, Dior, Burberry and others. There are cell phone kiosks, small restaurants and snack bars. Except for its charming sky lit granite and marble interior decor it's very similar to any high end shopping mall.
