The Muir Woods National Monument is located 12 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge.

In 1905, William and Elizabeth Kent donated 295 acres of redwoods to the federal government. This generous gift guaranteed preservation of these beautiful redwoods. In 1908, President Theodore Roosevelt declared this area a national monument. Kent requested the monument be named after conservationist John Muir. In response to this honor, Muir told Kent "This is the best tree lover's monument that could possibly be found in all the forests of all the world. You have done me a great honor and I am proud of it".

Muir woods will celebrate its 100 year birthday in 2008
