Long Description:The Science Fiction Hall of Fame (SF-HoF) is in the same
organically shaped building as the Experience Music Project (EMP),
at the base of the Seattle Space Needle.
Once you enter the door for the SF-HoF, you are immediately
plunged into - or rather assaulted by - the world of science
fiction. Perhaps because of the relatively small space allotted
this set of exhibits, but the first room is crammed with things.
The first room is mostly about concepts that science fiction
tackled, from cloning to distopias, to cyborgs and more, and
featured books, movies and other literature that were prime
examples. This room also had a place where the heralded writers,
movie makers, artists and publishers/producers involved in science
fiction were enshrined. There is also a timeline of the evolution
of science fiction.
The floor down was theme based. If you wanted all (or close to
all) the phasers in Star Trek, they are there. If you wanted to
hear the conversation between Robbie the Robot (Forbidden Planet)
and Robot (Lost in Space), that was there. There was an exhibit of
science fiction art that had a tiny sampling of what has been
produced on book and magazine covers. There was also a display
where you could select a starship and get its "specs."
Sample of People Enshrined (and some of my favorites): Gene
Roddenberry, Isaac Asimov, Ridley Scott, Allen Bradbury, Anne
McCaffery, Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, Mary Shelley, and George
Lucas.
Though I suppose that you could finish the museum in an hour or
less, I think that you would be missing a lot if you went through
it that fast. I think I went through it in an hour and a half.
A very interesting and worthwhile museum that will hopefully
spark your imagination by the time you are done.
