The Kenan Memorial Fountain is located at the center of Fifth Avenue and Market Street. The fountain was given to the City of Wilmington by William Rand Kenan, Jr. in 1921 as a memorial to his parents. The pool originally had a pool at street level which was removed in 1953 when the State Highway Commission suggested the fountain be moved. Rather than moving the fountain the city reduced the size of the fountain, installed lighting and widened the street around the fountain.
