GARRARD & LIGHTBURN TO STONE MOUNTAIN
The principle object of the wide swing of Federal forces S.E. from Roswell, where they crossed the Chattahoochee, was to cut the Ga. R.R. at & near Stone Mountain, thereby isolating Atlanta from the east.
Pursuant to plan, Logan’s 15th A.C. was posted at Browning’s Courthouse (Tucker) as support to Garrard’s Cavalry in its move on the R.R. between Stone Mountain and Decatur.
Lightburn’s brigade, of Logan’s corps, moved on this road with Garrard’s Cavalry, July 18, 1864, to Stone Mountain ~ their progress resisted & impeded by Wheeler’s Cavalry [Confederate] all the way.
