Not much of the museum’s collection is on display, but the museum is worth a visit just for its interior architecture, which is nothing short of beautiful.

The National Museum of African Art was founded by Warren M. Robbins, a former US Foreign Service Officer, in 1964. First housed in the former home of Frederick Douglas, the museum became part of the Smithsonian in 1979. The museum was moved to this facility on the Mall, mostly below ground, in 1987. The collection, only a fraction of which is on display in the three underground levels, consists of 8,500 pieces of traditional, modern and contemporary African art. The museum also maintains a 300,000 piece photography collection.
The Haupt Garden is on the roof of the museum, at ground level; the museum is connected to the Smithsonian’s other small art museums - the Sackler and International Galleries - below ground.
