After the erection of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and the placating of the detractors with the Three Servicemen statue, some people still felt that their experiences in Vietnam were not adequately represented. A third piece was needed, one representing the experience of women in Vietnam. This statue, a bronze by Glenna Goodacre, was dedicated on November 11, 1993. It is surrounded by eight yellowwood trees, representing the eight women killed in Vietnam. Their names are also on the Wall.
