The statue is located at a junction of several roads: Water Street, Carrall Street, Alexander Street and Powell Street.
According to the Gastown commerce site, Jack Deighton came to the area in 1867 and told the local people there by the mill that if they built a saloon for him, he would be their saloon keeper. The saloon was up and running in a day (apparently quite a motivator). Jack was a storyteller and was nicknamed "Gassy Jack" for all the yarns he spun. The saloon was called Deighton House Hotel. The settled area became known as "Gastown." In 1871, a more respectable name of Granville was adopted. Later, the name was changed again to Vancouver. In 1886, a terrible fire burned almost all of the buildings of the settlement, including Jack's hotel.
In 1986, this statue was put in place in his memory.
The URL is of the Gastown commerce site which has the history of Gastown and Jassy Jack.
