Dedicated on April 14, 1959 by former President Herbert Hoover, the carillon was designed by architect Douglas W. Orr, and the statue sculpted by Wheeler Williams. The 27 bells in the carillon were cast by the Paccard Bell Foundry in Annecy, France. With each bell weighing anywhere from 126 pounds to 7 tons, they chime together in perfect harmony.
Robert Taft, a Senator from Ohio, was the son of President and Supreme Court Justice William Howard Taft. He served in the Senate from 1938 until his death in 1953.
